The Townhouse Gallery of Contemporary Art is pleased to announce Cairo’s first live auction of contemporary art. This benefit event will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2009, in the gallery's factory space; the work on sale will be on view for a week prior to the auction.
More than thirty renowned artists, many from the Middle East have donated work to support Townhouse, a nonprofit foundation. Their generosity is testament to the gallery's ten-year history of promoting the arts in Egypt and its position as one of the leading independent spaces in the region.
Guests will have the opportunity to view work over cocktails and canapés at 7.00pm and then take part in an auction starting at 8.00 pm, conducted by Townhouse director, William Wells.
All funds raised will go to the gallery and its outreach program, which offers free arts workshops to adults and children, including those with special needs and from underserved communities.
For those unable to attend, works can be viewed online at www.thetownhousegallery.com from May 15, and bids placed with a gallery representative.
This press release, a welcome message from gallery director William Wells and hi-res images of the artworks can be downloaded from our press site at www.thetownhousegallery.com/artsale from April 1.

Townhouse Gallery of Contemporary Art
Townhouse was founded in 1998 to support artistic work and increase accessibility to contemporary art in Egypt. It has rapidly grown to become one of the region’s leading independent art spaces.
The three-floor main building and 650-square-meter converted factory space house exhibition galleries showcasing new contemporary works, classrooms, a library and archive, and six studios. The gallery hosts theater and experimental music performances as well as film screenings, public lectures, symposiums, and workshops.
The Townhouse Gallery is a foundation that depends on donations and fundraising activities. In addition to promoting contemporary Egyptian art, the gallery runs an extensive education and outreach program that brings the arts to some of Egypt’s most underprivileged communities, such as child laborers and refugees. Workshops cover such diverse areas as animation, theater, visual arts, set design, and filmmaking.
