Compassion: This is the first episode from the Art21 Access 09’ Series featuring William Kentridge, Carrie Mae Weems and Doris Salcedo. The selected artist works explore the possibility of understanding and reconciling past and present, while exposing injustice and expressing tolerance for others. The screening will be followed by a conversation between Sarah Rifky and Marwan Fayed on art and social responsibility and how the artists view their own responsibility to the subjects they address in their work.

Sarah Rifky is a Curator at the Townhouse Gallery of contemporary art. She completed her MFA in Critical Studies at the Malmo Art Academy, Lund University, Sweden in 2009 and obtained her BA in Visual Arts and Mass Communciation from the American University in Cairo in 2003. Since, Rifky has worked as an artist, writer, designer and speculative curator. Her interests include language, performance, performativity, (post)colonialsm, (re)presentation, narrative, artistic research and curating as everyday practice. Rifky is an organizer of the artistic network Reloading Images, she features as editor and contributor in the book Damascus: Artists, Tourists and Secret Agents and is on the board of MOTO, Museum of the Occident.

Marwan Fayed completed his undergraduate degree in architecture at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Helwan University in 2003. Since then, he has been exploring Cairo’s urban structure through a series of experimental interventions. His proposals build upon existing practices of city-dwellers, and the ways in which they navigate their lived space. Fayed’s approach is based on observations of social values and habits in urban culture. In his practice as a product designer, he is interested in optimising resources available to the local industry. Fayed currently runs his own design studio and teaches at the German University in Cairo.

This screening will be held in English. This even will be held at the Townhouse Gallery Library (2nd Floor)
